For the month of May, our service project is focused on "Period Poverty." It will take place throughout May, with multiple drop-off locations for supplies. The donations collected will benefit YWCA, Share House, and two resource centers for low-income families, which provide hygiene supplies at no cost.
Period poverty occurs when individuals who menstruate lack access to essential menstrual products, hygiene facilities, and education due to financial limitations. This issue affects countless low-income women, students, and individuals experiencing homelessness, forcing them to choose between basic necessities and menstrual care.
Research shows that 1 in 4 menstruating individuals in the U.S. have experienced period poverty. Many miss work, struggle with daily tasks, or even drop out of school due to the lack of menstrual supplies.
Every month, thousands in the U.S. struggle to afford pads, tampons, or period cups, adding to their financial burden.
Despite being a basic necessity, menstrual products are not covered by government safety net programs like SNAP (food stamps) or Medicaid, making them even harder to access for those in need.
Using improvised or overused products increases the risk of infections and other health issues.
